Something is brewing out in the Atlantic and headi

Something is brewing out in the Atlantic and heading our way.

We’ve moved into the marina, as it’s difficult to forecast if this weather event will turn into a #tropicaldepression before it arrives at Bonaire, or if it will track to the North or South of us.

Ironically, if it develops into a #tropicalDepression, then it will be named “Bonnie”.

Being from the north of England, my definition of Bonnie would be: nice, attractive, good or excellent. Not sure I would concur with that!

They say that all Caribbean islands are the same. The idyllic image has palm trees swaying the breeze while their shadows are cast down onto a soft sand beach and thumping reggae music providing an acoustic backdrop to this paradise. To gain entry to this image you have to go through a multitude of offices where the officers are typically grumpy, without humour and your mere presence is an offence. Bonaire is a Caribbean Island but offers none of this; it offers so much more....

When cruising offshore there seem to be 2 modes of operation. In the first there is no stress, miles effortlessly slip by under the keel, everything is on a level and the boat simply looks after itself. The other mode of sailing involves gut-wrenching sphincter-tightening fear, where everything you touch breaks turning a dire situation deadly and where you simply long for an end to the nightmare you’ve found yourself in. Lee Bay, Antigua – Simpson Bay Lagoon, Sint Maarten via Coca Point & Low Bay Barbuda.

In a classic episode of ‘Harry Enfield and Chums’ Wayne and Waynetta Slob with their kids Frogmella and Spud-u-Lika, get to the final of a gameshow. To win their dream prize, probably something pizza based, they just need to name anything beginning with the letter ‘B’. As you’d expect they blew the chance by coming up with the world ‘Ba-tato’. In that game show we’d have no problem as we’ve been to beautiful Barbuda, where the big blue breaks blissfully onto boundless beaches which are baked below a blazing sun...

Portsmouth, Dominica – Lee Bay, Antigua via Bouillante, Guadeloupe, Plage Thomas, Guadeloupe, Jolly Harbour, Antigua & Deep Bay, Antigua

In years gone by Guadeloupe has always been known to us as ‘The Cursed Isle’. While in its rolly anchorages Ruffian 1 was battered by weather and when we explored its hinterland, we found ourselves stranded far from home not a bus in sight where our thumbs didn’t illicit friendly lifts home. Antigua on the other hand had been a joy, its sun kissed beaches had lapped Ruffian 1 into a gentle slumber while underwater fishies had frolicked and corals were colourful. Since our last visit Guadeloupe has shaken its curse and joined the joy of Antigua...
