“Taglines”
Fort Du France, Martinique – Portsmouth, Dominica via Roseau & Salisbury, Dominica

A tag line should encompass everything that an organisation stands for and the best ones create differentiation from competition. ‘Uzbekistan Airlines’ wish all their customers ‘Good Luck’ when flying, while ‘Sunglasses Hut’ have been ‘Sitting on your face since 2001’. Dominica’s tagline perfectly sums up everything about the high verdant green hills, the oceans that team with fish and the people who ooze friendliness. Dominica is ‘Nature Island’....

Grand Anse D’Artlets, Martinique – Fort Du France, Martinique via Anse Mitan,& Petit Ilet, Martinique

Geometric shapes are categorised by the number of sides they have. Decagons have 10 sides, squares have 4 and at the bottom of the pack is the lowly triangle with 3. If the west coast of Martinique were to be a shape it would be the lowly triangle, but each side would be vastly different, unexpected and not confirming to expectations....

St Annes, Martinique – Grand Anse D’Artlets, Martinique

When Weightwatchers was conceived their idea of weight management through a carefully constructed scheme of calorie counting, portion control and support networks they didn’t reckon with all the qualities that are found in French islands. French islands ooze with supermarkets filled with cheese and bread while sweet aromas waft down every street giving away the secrets of hidden kitchens. While in Martinique Ruffian and ‘The Ruffians’ have been playing their own, very unsuccessful game, of Weightwatchers....

“Oh Nicole”. “Ah papa”!

Prickly Bay, Grenada – St Annes, Martinique via Tyrell Bay, Carriacou

As a child of the 90’s nothing says France like the cheeky conversations between ‘Nicole’ and her ‘Papa’ before she slips into her Renault Clio and zips off to pick up a baguette or something else typically French. We wanted to see ‘Nicole’, we wanted to revel in the Frenchness of the French Caribbean and with our new sails and company in tow we were off to meet ‘Nicole’ and find out what her ‘Papa’ was so concerned about...

“Qua Qua”
Prickly Bay, Grenada

If anyone ever says ‘It’ll be fine’, then you know it’s not going to be fine and if they say ‘no problem’ this is interpreted as there is a big problem. Using the same reasoning if a hike is described as a ‘challenging hike’, having ‘precipitous drops’, is ‘vertigo inducing’, and you’re recommended to ‘take a change of clothes’ then it should be more of a stroll than a hike and literally a walk in the park. Oh how wrong could we be...

“Moving from an unhappy place to a happy one”
Tyrell Bay, Carriacou – Prickly Bay, Grenada

There are many ways to bring happiness into the world. Ruffian is happy when her sails are full and she slips through the water using just the power of the wind. The batteries are happy when they’re full to the brim and settle into ‘float’* mode. Iain & Fiona are both very happy after their morning constitution has been successfully flushed away and they have a spring in their steps. Recently we have not been in these happy places and have worked hard to get back to them....

“Thriving and Diving”

There are some places in the universe where humans have evolved to thrive in and others where they have no place to be at all. They thrive in warm climates, where sunshine can warm their bones and on land where they can travel almost effortlessly. Places where they have no natural reason for being at all include bobbing about on the ocean or at the bottom of it looking up. Luckily for us we have thrived in one and survived the other...
